For those listeners who are not tied to a version they've heard a dozen times, you find that Deep Forest's music "live" is very melodic, catchy yet driving; it can really stand on its own without the (for some) beloved studio effects. As just ONE example, "Baba" from Boheme: I can hardly listen to it; the singers sound drunk or about to croak, and the "electronic effects" make the chorus sound like they are down in different wells. For a live performance, the quality of the sound is really great, and I disagree with negative reviews, including the most popular one on here. They have selected their best compositions to include here, and in my judgement have improved every one. World "electronica" mixed with passion, humor, and fantastic musicianship.
Where the crowd can be heard, if anything they help you appreciate the performances here. The studio albums do not have the energy, soul, or beauty of these performances. You CANNOT GO WRONG with this CD. Interested in Deep Forest. I keep buying copies to give away as gifts, and always have a couple spare.
The Made in Japan version of this song is so different.and so wonderful.
~The Rebecca Review "Deep Forest" can at times melt cultures into a musical paradise, which gives this a high multicultural appeal. Deep Forest has tribal textures with soothing melodious moments and earthy comfort. This music feels like a home for your soul. If you love world music, this would make a nice addition to your collection.
Enjoy and bear in mind that it hasn't been all that long that human beings have been able to go back and listen to a performance that occurred in the past. The studio stuff is brilliant, but sounds quantized next to this album with its live vocalists and the band grooving to a smoking kit drummmer. The surprising part is how much energy is infused into their music as the result of performing live. I did not know what to expect initially, since the DF sound seems to be primarily sample based, sequenced and synthetic. That there are songs from other Deep Forest albums here should not come as a big surprise. That's why we have audience mics running into the board.
Anyhow, this my personal favorite from Deep Forest. The vocal performances are breathtaking. Apparently, there are people who do not understand that bands do tend to perform live at times - and when they do, they generally perform songs in their personal repertoire. It's some big noise. Also, it never hurts to have a terrific kit drummer on hand. Very well recorded with some brilliant performances all around.
The song arrangements are done well and it turns out that the music lends itself particularly well to live performances. There is plenty of applause and shouting as there should be - one of the best parts about live performances is hearing the crowd's reaction to the music as it is taking place.
Over half of the songs are repeats from the Boheme album. Oh well. I was very disappointed with this album. Wish I had paid more attention to the list of songs before I bought it.
While I don't really recommend live albums that much Made In Japan however I have to say is a must have. While the original version has a sort of danceable beat the live version on this CD to me is better. In general, I am more into the studio recorded albums than I am into live albums and I hate the redundant clapping and shouting but Made In Japan is a HUGE exception. I especially love the live versions of Deep Weather, The Hunter and their internation smash hit Sweet Lullaby. The more complex sound of Sweet Lullaby magnifies that tracks power. The musicianship is absolutely incredible. They actually improved the songs. Green & Blue in it's parent album sounds good but the live version on Made In Japan sounds absolutely incredible.
It's great to hear their older songs given different drum loops with Sweet Lullaby being the prime example. Forest Power is just plain breathtaking with fusions of rock, world, pop, jazz, funk and New Age all melted together. I'm not too much into live albums. Many of the songs on here while they sound good on their parent albums sound greatly improved especially those from the Comparsa albums. In fact I like the live version alot more with the beats sounding a bit more original.
